The Curriculum for 4, 5 and
6 Year Olds
Guided by a set of developmental domains and a set
of habits of mind outcomes, the curriculum for 4 to 6 year
olds consists of both the structured curriculum and emergent
curriculum. The structured curriculum focuses on literacy
and math concept and skills that prepare children for school
readiness. The emergent curriculum allows children to apply
these skills and concepts in projects based on topics that
meet their interests.
Four trans-disciplinary themes provide the framework
for the exploration of knowledge in project work. Teachers
and students are guided by these broad themes as they
design curricular units for exploration and study as
follows.
- The Child’s World
- Communicating in the World
- People in the World
- Wonders of the World
Six subject knowledge are integrated into the 4 trans-disciplinary
themes of the curriculum model as follows.
1.Language learning and communication
2.Early mathematical Learning
3.Early science Learning
4.Aesthetic and creative expression learning
5.Health and physical learning
6.Social and personal learning
Students explore the subject areas through
these themes, often in ways that transcend conventional
subject boundaries. In the process, they develop an understanding
of important concepts, acquire essential skills and knowledge,
develop particular attitudes and learn to take socially
responsible action.
The Mandarin
Curriculum
The Chinese programme for 18 months to 6 year
olds adopts a literacy-based curriculum where children
in the different age groups are introduced to listening,
speaking, reading and writing the chinese language. Through
a variety of stories, songs, rhymes, poems, music and
games, the curriculum seeks to immerse children in the
chinese culture, to build interests in the language and
to learn moral values. |
